This link (http://tr.warcry.com/news/view/72434) has two videos (Top one is a Trailer, bottom is 10mins of ingame raw footage) and a selection of screenshots.
Have to say i was fairly looking forward to this somewhat as it will be released around the time of Conan i was planning on jumping on this if Conan sucks teh huge hairys, buuuut, im not sure i like the look of it now. That 10min video had some stuff in that im not crazy about, more specifically the way some of the combat looks, the fact that you cant take on two pretty big aircraft things and not get instagibbed by their bloody rockets and some of the human animations (Except those guys walking with the staffs, they looked good).
It looks all to rather NCSofty tbh, City Of Heroes with more guns and better textures, dont get me wrong i like CoX but its not a game you would play religiously like most MMO's.

I'm still very undecided about this game. I think it has decent potential, but I'm going to wait for enough people to recommend it before I take the plunge.

Ludi you at best played five minutes of Pirates, maybe ten. Shit I bet you played barely longer than Pariah did and I doubt Pariah even made it out of the tutorial judging by the level of his only toon.
The reasons why PotBS is like Planetside.
1. Faction versus faction is pivotal to the entire game. Ports, like bases and continents, change hands. Unlike Planetside the entire map can be won. Attacking a new port feels just like opening up a new continent or draining a base. The system isn't the same (thank God), but that's the mentality, the teams have attackable, defensible, territory.
2. Levels offer options, not direct statistical benefits. A level 50 character has access to more skills, ships and equipment, but it confers no direct benefit. This is similar to Planetside, as it means even low level characters can fight in PvP. This is a really critical factor also, as the low cost of respecs mean you can, much as in Planetside, shift your character to suit a given team role. A level 1 WoW character can't hit a level 70, he sure as hell can't kill him. A level one Pirates of the Burning Sea character in his freebie Halifax Schooner has the exact same damage output as a level 50 in a Halifax Schooner, unless said level 50 has picked skills to give him the edge. This mirrors how in Planetside a lowbie in a MAX suit was still a MAX suit. The difference mainly is that they don't give the goodies to lowbies right away, which is probably for the best.
3. Teamwork and strategy are absolutely vital to accomplishing faction goals, but you can still whore solo and kill things. Given a group as accomplished and disciplined as the RL Planetside team was we could dominate the port battles and open water PvP encounters.
The critical difference between PotBS and Planetside is the way combat happens, Planetside is an FPS, Pirates is a ship combat game. Aside from that the parallels run deep. What Pirates has that Planetside doesn't is the economy, Planetside had it in a very, very primitive sense 'got no tech plant, can't spawn Vanguards', but Pirates takes that to a much greater level.
I think Pirates is the natural and best successor to Planetside as far as team based faction versus faction games go. Sure it's not an FPS, there may never be an FPS like Planetside again, but beyond the change of combat system the parallels at the most fundamental levels are there. There are very few pure faction v faction games out there, and this one is awesome.

Touched a nerve have i? :p
PoTBS is just the same as TR, WoW, EQ2 and every other MMORPG since the birth of the RNG. Its just another Grindfest this time in ships.
Infact, put Jack Sparrow (Rather than the Jack Swallow, Jackie Sparrow or the Jack Sparow's i have seen) and it might as well be Disneys PoTC.
It has about as much in common with PlanetSide as you have experience with Tabula Rasa... exactly fuck all. PoTBS is a niche game, just like every MMO since WoW, they dont compete with WoW as it currently is a juggernaught that isnt stopping... just make youself a clone and set it in a different time/universe and your set up for a few years.

Seriously tho, PoTBS has more in common with Planet Side than any other game I've played, besides EVE maybe. This game requires skill and tactics to win. The PvP is awesome, not to mention the complex economy.

You did touch a nerve, because when you spray poorly informed ignorance around here like so much runny cat shit somebody has to clean it up.
Fact is the mid to end game, from about level 20 or so, of Pirates of the Burning Sea is pure PvP. There is no PvE endgame, nor is there intended to be. You level up and you fight, just like in Planetside. The economy exists to drive the war machine. The nearest you'll find to a raid instance is you and twenty four of your mates facing off against twenty five enemy players and a bloody great fortress.
What we're basically talking about is an MMO similar, so I am lead to believe, in many ways to Sid Meier's Pirates, with a structured factional combat system similar to Planetside and an economy like a simplified and much more engaging version of EVE Online. No clicky clicky crafting, production for supply and demand.
I freely admit I haven't played Tabula Rasa, but in the other thread Kong described it as Science Fiction WoW, and that's a deal breaker for me.
Lyngs makes a fair point though, you sound exactly like I would if I'd only spent fifteen minutes playing the game.

Actually i played it solidly for about 5 days and it just was not my thing, which is my opinion. I actually have more than one toon in several factions all of which are at a minimum level 12(I think the lowest is that). So i wouldnt exactly call it poorly informed and you just look like a hypocrit when you lambast TR without actually playing it.
This is besides the point. PoTBS is no different from any other MMO, it is exactly click, click, click... grind. I will give you the fact that Teamwork wise, yes it is very good but it is in no way on the scale as PlanetSide. I never said it was a poor game i just said it wasnt an amazing game that i for one had hoped.
My whole point tho is dont judge a book by its cover, after all Hovis you as a Journo should know not to, after all i could easily say that CustomPC is shit because i have not read it yet it looks like every other PC Hobbyist magazine out there on the shelf but im not.
What you should do is go and get yourself a TR Beta key, i would have supplied you with one as i have had 4 so far but they have all gone, and try it yourself. Kong's description of WoW with Laser's isnt even close. I would say its more like PlanetSide with AI and a psuedo Rainbow6 sticky targetting, many here dont like it but personally i have found it fun just lacking in content (Altho the latest patch was over 2gig and added a fuck load of content, including crafting). I mean c'mon! Since when was WoW gonna have Tank's, Hoverbikes and ATV's? :p

Oh and: "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!" :p
I think the long and short of it is the both of you disagree, while yelling at each other provides amusement for the rest of us, it may be a bit pointless for the pair of you. Unless you enjoy it, in which case, feel free to carry on.

Hmm. Now Tabula Rasa sounds a little better, but I was quite put off by the gameplay video. Looked like the character was just getting constantly shot to hell by giant robots with no effect at all.

I don't claim to have played either game, but have read a little.
I think what hovis is hinting at in comparing pirates to planetside is the openess of the combat and the taking of terrain more so than the actual gameplay mechanics.

That's it to an extent. What I'm really driving at I suppose is that it's the only game since Planetside really with a viable player enemy which is critical to the game. 99% of the other games I've seen are PvE focussed, and the PvP is a sideshow. Sure WoW has battlezones as do many games, but there is no sense of a factional struggle for domination. EVE has a little of it, but the factions are artificial and let's face it, if you like EVE you're already playing it, if not you're not. Pirates is a PvP driven endgame, a PvP driven economy, and a place where even carebears have to tread lightly.
In Pirates the factions can win, it takes some months unless on faction is clearly dominating, but it's an actual achievable goal. It's not so hard as locking down all the continents in Planetside was either because each win takes you nearer the goal. I expect when it goes live the first round of Pirates will be akin to a Counterstrike pistols round.

I started tebula rasa quite exited, as I read a lot about it and thought the concept was great. I played through the tutorial and I loved the part with the alarm going off and you having to defend the fort. Then when I dived for cover, I got shot through the wall cause the die for damage had already been rolled, that was me grinding my teeth for the first time. But I figured, heck if the gameplay is good I can live with another game that uses the damage table rule set instead of hit box detection. Then I got out of the tutorial, and got 3 missions. Kill 30x xxx kill 20 x xxx kill 30 x xxx. Then I uninstalled the game and deleted the beta installer. What a piece of shit.

I'm disappointed Garriot went the way of quests and levels etc. Ultima Online worked fantastically because it had none of that. It was a case of here's the world, deal with it.

Just like Star Wars Galaxies was at first - no levels, no huge hitpoint or other stat differences. You could tell how advanced someone was roughly by judging from their equipment etc. and title they used (IF they chose to use a proper one).
Then SOE fucked the innovative and unique character advancement system in the bum and implemented the generic bullshit levels and whatnot.
Way of the day: the more generic it is (read: more like WoW), the better - unfortunately. For example reading the latest drastic changes in AoC and the main excuses for postponing release made me disgusted and i've since developed a mild loathing towards Funcom - their "mold-breaking features" get diluted by the day as it seems.
Originality is dead. :(

No matter how much you try to argue this (im talking mainly at ludi, but anyone else that I can abuse in the progress, all the better) PoTBS is NOT another grind fest more than PS used to be. The argument only holds true if you go all the way down to the absolute basics. But then again, you can say that all computers programs are the same, they are all composed of god damn code, wtf, somone be more original please!
Main features about PoTBS; You can play with people of all lvls, because different ships have different uses, fast, small ships are just as viable as big lumbering cannon platforms.
The pvp system, while not groundbreaking, has many interesting features, with teams opposing each other, being able to take territory from each other, and most importantly: the ability to actually win, and being rewarded for doing so.
Unique combat system (yes yes you can say it's just another point and click combat system, but so is Planetside, Halflife, Company of heroes and god damn flight sim as well if you want to make retarded arguments)
Finally: Please, all of you, if you want to make argument as to why a game is good/bad, make an actuall argument instead of just random curses and meaningless sentences. Thank you.

I wasn't that much of an avid SWG player, but I did play it for a while and I did like the fact that you had slightly more freedom in it, and the player econmy was intresting if suffering from terrible inflation.
If you didn't find someone nice to give you money and stuff it was quite hard to get off the ground at the start.
The way they did player housing was nice as well because you could wander all over the universe and drive into a random city, go onto a different server and find that the where the city was placed was nothing but a swamp full of gators (see reference: Bread-Naval Plan A).
That said, the combat was boring, just string up a que of killing stuff and while JTL was somewhat intresting it was not enough to keep me on SWG alone when I could get any of the Xwing games.
What I truely want to see in a game is a continental world where if I wanted to plan insurection, bring down the king and rule from the shadows I could...
