Lineage2 is open PVP, you can attack and kill anyone you like anywhere you like except for in towns.
It has a flagging system and karma though. If you kill a toon that isn't PVP flagged, you'll go red and gain karma, unless you are both in clans which are at war with each other.
If you have over 5 PKs, then you will drop up to 5 items from your inventory (or what you have equipped) when you die, if you have karma.
Once you've worked off (or died off) your karma, you go back to being white.
You can do quests to reduce your PK count.
There is very little "instancing". Only a couple of raid bosses have it. 95% of the raid bosses are in open areas (same with XP areas). It is not uncommon for an enemy bishop to come along and 30% heal the raid boss you are attacking in an attempt to wipe your raid and pick up your dropped items. (you have a chance of dropping equipment when you die).
Dying to a mob loses 4%. At level 78+ that is about 15hrs of grinding to recover. Dying in a clan war is 1%, dying to a non-clanwar is 4%
You can delevel.
