I'm not going to go for the beta. I don't like Beta because it's not how the game is meant to be played and betas are always full of whiners. I've not played a beta except Company of Heroes and then gone on to play the game, it always ruins it.

I applied anyway, I will take that choice when, or if I get in.

Games I went from Beta to Retail in:
Planetside
Lineage2
WoW (although with a year gap)

There are several I didn't switch to retail though:
Archlord
RF Online
Auto Assault
Vanguard

At the end of the day, a good game will make you want to buy it, a crap game will make you want to ignore it.

That's the rumour. But I'd say at least 90% of the people in a beta are just there to whine to try and get an advantage when the game goes live. Maybe 10% actually care about the finished product.

Personally I care enough about the finished product to only want to play the game as a finished product. If you guys like betas that's fine, personally I'd rather not burn out on a crappy version of a game before getting to play it in it's full form.

Hmm, the Bread speaketh wise words there...

I'm looking forwards to Conan like a kiddie to christmas and should i get a beta spot some of the "ZOMG" value would prolly be dampened by playing an incomplete version of it and knowing what'll happen at start etc. before i have the box sitting on my desk...

Then again i'm itching to see the world portrayed in the preview screenies and try out the combat system...

For an MMORPG, that would mean leaving off buying the game until it is at least a year past it's release date. You might then buy a "finished game", but those who bought it on the release date would have an advantage over you, no matter that they were months ahead of the content way back when the game was released.

Catch 22 methinks

Nah, the game at released is finished. That's the starting gun. You either buy it then or it's not worth bothering.

Then by all accounts you shouldnt have been playing PlanetSide or EQ2 as they were both utter shite at release. Shot yourself in the foot there Kingsmill* :p

Practically every MMO that has been released hasn't been finished.

Yeah it's where the race starts, but most MMOs have been heavily bugridden, poorly optimized, poorly balanced and lacking in content at release

Planetside wasn't an MMORPG, and I played EQ2 from day one. I was the first halfling in Freeport on my server. I made it across while still level 12, and this was before there were even many players out in the Steppes and Forest. It took hours to make the crossing and I mooned the statue of Lucan D'Lere before the guards chucked me out.

MMO games are time based though, now more than ever. You put the hours in to get the rewards. Shit I can't remember the last MMORPG that was fun to just play and didn't just have a grind. Might have been UO. Point is that if you want to be 'good' at an MMO you need to get in early because time spent in game is worth nearly as much as skill or brains.

WoW is a pretty good example of where that is different. If you're in the right guild, you can catch up with someone who has been playing the game from release in only a matter of months.

Even the heavy-grinding Lineage2 has changed from where it used to be. It took me a year to reach level 75 playing from release. You can now do that in a couple of months due to experience gain changes, even without full buffs. Granted, I'd have a lot more assets that the newer character.

Dont wanna waste time on that while all other people rush for maximum level allready ;)

I'd say WoW is the classic Get There Early Or Don't Bother title. When I was playing through it there were no groups for the raids, unless I wanted a guided tour with tooled up Renegades, there was very little low level PvP, there were high level enemy campers in the disputed lands, it's was toss. When I played EQ2 my guild and I were at the cutting edge for a lot of the time, we got a few firsts and we hit the big quest targets at the right level in the right numbers. I don't see any reason why anybody would want to rushed through the levelling up process (otherwise known as the game) to the point where they can simply become one more cog in a well oiled raiding machine built by other players.

i wouldnt agree on that. my feeling of wow is that once you hit the highest lvl, thats when the real game starts. getting there is just a sign of commitment. Once you and your friends are at the highest lvl, even if you might be months behind other guilds, you still progress at your own rate and killing a boss will still give you satisfaction. Even when people were killing Kel'Thuzud in Naxx there were guilds that were just starting to raid MC. I dont think you gave WoW a chance tbh. If you got to 60/70 and joined raids where peope actually did stuff, then you'd see where the real fun is at.

If the "game" is the grind, I dont think its a good game.
I have to agree whit GA here, as a eg,if grind was the point wouldnt everyone quit PS after BR20/CR5?

the reason i never got into wow is because of the initial grind- i don't have time to spend 2+ months grinding just so i can then have fun playing the game. Would rather log on PS for an hour - kill some people or do a few galdrops. I can't say it's hurt WoW- just looks at the number of subscribers but it certainly meant i didn't subscribe for long.

Difference with PS is even at br1 you can still have fun.

Actually the real difference is that PlanetSide requires ACTUAL skill to play. You dont press a button to target something and then another to attack.

If JoJo had read up about the combat system and watched a few of the videos he would have seen that this game is far more skill requiring than the likes of WoW.

There are no preset "Attack" buttons you get to choose the direction of your weapons swing and if the model of the weapon passes through a npc/players model it does damage, also EVERYTHING it passes through takes damage, so swing your weapon and it kill hurt every npc/player that it passes through

Well I am officially sick of WOW now and I find getting back to FPS shooters hard after going easy mode for so long.

Got my guild to Grul and now I really cant see the point anymore. LOts of leetness comming out in players now and people are getting very greedy.

TBC really did knock the game alot.

Looking forward to AOC it looks nice and I like the cross of RPG FPS MMO, I only hope the combat is what it is supposed to be.

Its gonna look very tasty on my 24" Dell Monitor :D

i wouldnt say that wow requires no skill. PS is twitch skill whereas WoW is knowing your abilites and using them at the right time.

Daymare

saying that rpg games require no skill is just wrong. As GA so nicely put, there's a big difference between twitch skill and calculative skill, but if you try pvp even with a well geared char in wow you will find yourself coming up short if you don't know how to controll your char (unless you are playing a beastmastery hunter or an sl lock :P )

I must admidt you are right here GA

So many times in my guild I Out healed and out played saved the Day on big moments that I cant count them all up.

I used to get so anouyed that Priests could not out heal me and I used to kick them out again and again.

Got so sick of prissy priests that we ended up doing the WHOLE BWL run and get NEF down with 1 Priest 4 pallys 3 Druids.

Used to make me laugh when priests that wanted to join would insist on doing things there way, only to be humbled by me as there healing was just rubbish.

Even Levelled a Priest and I still beat them...

So no skill required? With out being to big headed yeah some skill is required as Daymare says.

Ive changed my mind about WoW, I no longer believe its a game that takes fuck all skill. Its just a game that you will do well in if youre a little bit gay and like to get T-bagged on a friday night.

Here is a choice Netster quotes from another forum I host:

One of the most intense experiences I've ever had was some deep anal on a girlfriend who shared a large curry with me the night before. Hot spicy poo around your bellend in the confined space of an anus is quite a rush.

Perhaps you can add him to your book as a special appearence

Techincal Beta started a few days ago.

Now is an incredibly exciting time for everyone working at Funcom. The technical beta is kicking off and we’ve already started inviting several hundred players to join us and become some of the first people to tread the blood-soaked earth of Hyboria under their sandaled (or chain mailed, for that matter) feet. After years of working on the game behind closed doors it is finally ready for the world. Bringing more external testers into the game is a very interesting experience for us, especially with so many people participating. We’re just as excited as you are, if not even more!
