View Full Version : Armed Assault Players sound off

So it's official. The game is quality. Online play works fine. Next patch is bringing in persistent worlds. Flight model is hard as fuck, but the reason is that it allows more control.
So anyway who's playing? It's time to get an RL crew together.
Edited to add, I've done some looking around at the persistent worlds options. Basically the potential is there to create something akin to Planetside, but with Armed Assault, a continual war for the island (or at least continual until somebody wins). That could just be the Holy Grail, the game that replaces Planetside.

Got it, like it quite a lot. Haven't tried online yet but that persistent world mode sounds uber. The single player campaign's awesome alone, playing something like that with people instead of the artificial "intelligence" (why does it seem that the enemy AI is by far more advanced than the boneheads on your side? Are they trying to simulate yanks accurately? :D :p ) friendlies would be just brilliant.
PS. Btw i love the infantry damage modelling in ArmA although it has its annoyances in single player: you get hit in the head you're dead, you can take a round or two on your body (ballistic vests) or arms but your aim will start to be rather shitty since you can't hold the rifle steady anymore and - my favourite bit - if you get shot in the legs you can kneel or sometimes even stand up but you ain't going anywhere standing tall. On one campaing mission was doing pretty well until a crewman from abandoned tank fookin dinged me in legs. Dropped the bugger but - i shit you not - had to CRAWL around 30 mins on the desert to get to nearby US camp and field hospital. No game for impatient ADHD twitch-kiddies this one i tell ya. :p

Not sure what role as I've not tried the game yet.

Guys I know we all love the easy mode kill-everybody-with-no-comebacks life of a sniper, but be aware that basically all a sniper is in ArmA is a grunt who can't cut it when people shoot back. Not that I have anything against snipers (noooo not a bit of it, bastards) but I think if we're going to put anything together as an outfit the emphasis will need to be on real infantry as the core constituent.
My advice for players starting out or looking to brush up on what we'll need is get in the mission builder and set yourself up some infantry fights. Proper infantry. That means rifles without newbscopes, enemies well within their own engagement range, and learning the fine art of running the fuck away from anything you don't have the weaponry to kill.
What I envision for RL in Armed Assault is a more grown up version of our presence in Planetside. We take what we had in Planetside, the discipline and the skill at killing and we improve upon it. We learn how to move outdoors as infantry (something we never grasped, or really needed to, in PS), we learn a bit of patience, we learn how to run teams of players when each player has an AI squad in tow (imagine that, an RL company, not just a squad), when some P/W servers pop up, we pwn the shit out of everything and everybody.

Not in ArmA Fluff old son. It's a war sim. Snipers are incredibly powerful. That's why I don't like having them around. It's easymode on a grand scale. That's as it should be, in terms of realism, but it makes for a poo game. :D

Shush Hovis, let them be, all we have to do is create situations where Snipers are useless and the problem is solved.
I need to get out and buy this game I think, its been years since I played Flashpoint, the problem is I'm buggered for transport at the moment which is a shame because I've got nothing to drink either...

Not having played through all of the single player, and never having played mutliplayer OPF, what other weapons/vehicles/command abilities are there?
Will we have wire-guided missiles like Javelin? Can we call in artillery? Mortars? Those will all sort out snipers. Failing that, stay in vehicles when possible and use copious ammounts of smoke when not. When you run out of smoke, call in smoke from aircraft or artillery, or if in grassy terrain napalm or a similar incendiary agent will work. Of course, if you know where the sniper is, then just call it in on his head.
How do planes and helicopters work in multiplayer e.g. who gets them?

@ Hovie im happy to sit in the woods and wait for a kill or support people storming a building.
Probs be most happy in a plane cordinating where to bomb ect.
Ordering it now.
@ Vasq - Arty totally destroyed squad work and tacticle side of BF2....if a squad stuck and worked together to capture a control point they just got jibed by the enemy commander and his rain of death.

Generally speaking a multiplayer game works like this:
Host picks a mission that somebody built. Playable roles are available on a first come first served basis, or the server can pick. What those roles are, what equipment is available and so on, is decided on in the mission. Maybe your mission is the players are all civilians armed with harsh language, or maybe you're black ops with an array of weapons available and you spawn in a tank factory. I'm getting to grips with mission building, but there's already dozens out there to pick from.
Not sure how persistent maps will play out but the potential is enormous.
As for sorting out snipers, any descent vehicle can fuck them up, as can a machinegun or assault rifle if it gets in range. Meanwhile just hide or run perpendicular to the bastards. :D

Fuck. I've been playing it Co-Op multiplayer.
It is fantastic. I'd sniffed around some small servers before, but 20 player co-op is the unmitigated mutts nuts. Planetside fans, prepare for a religious experience.
Three screenies from the nights play.
Left to right.
First there I am being a good medic and supporting a comrade as we take a town in one map. This map was an absolute fucker. Took an hour. Brilliant fun though. Basically we spawned at a base a few klicks out, rolled in in a convoy of Styker APCs, then broke down the defence around the town and finally busted in street by street, alley by alley, corpse by corpse.
Second picture we're on main street, its hard to advance cos there are enemy jeeps and heavy jeeps around. Jeeps you can drop the crew with a few shots, heavy jeeps you can disable with grenades (fuck the wheels up) but need a LAW to destroy. Our APCs got bogged down and there were RPG snipers on the roofs.
Third is a different mission entirely, rolling in and around a small town using a convoy of Humvees. We attacked it like Indians circling a wagon train, hammering the defenders with the TOW launchers, M2 machineguns and auto-grenade launchers on the humvees. This shot is taken after my driver got killed stacking us into a wall to squish an RPG trooper. I bailed and tried to hook up with the rest of the squad. The weird green lighting is from a parachute flare, fired by our commander cos it's too light for nightvision and too dark to see.
Regarding persistent play, I dunno what the patch will do, but it's already possible to play a campaign over many hours, hell days. Some missions will take a long time, with several phases. Line up a long bunch of missions and game on. If we put the effort into making our own missions, then we are as Gods.

fukin hell its hard
That's pretty much what I said when the convoy of Humvees I was riding with lit up that little town with heavy weapons by the light of parachute flares. Although I think my exact phrase was "I'm feeling rigid". Same thing though really.
Seriously guys, if you stick at it this game is the madnote. Just like Planetside the learning curve is like running full speed into a wall, and sometimes you'll not be able to find the right fight or you'll be stuck without transport on a shit map or you'll get TKed by a nonce, but it's worth it when it comes together.
By the way, ran into Irishdude as well while I was playing. Blast from the past there eh? :D

Problem I'm having is my video settings. I want to run it on 'normal' quality level, as this looks great IMO but gives very slick FPS. However, I want it to run in 1280x1024 resolution. Everytime I change the quality down to 'normal' it changes my resolution to 1024x968, and everytime I switch my resolution back up to 1280x1024, it turns the quality up to 'high'.
Also, how do the missiles on the Cobra work? I can fire them, but not target them. How do I assign targets to my gunner etc?
I think I'm gonna have to compile a list of the errors this game has just to vent my frustration. Realistic my arse :( Fun though :D
Dunno when I'll be able to play as I'll need to, ahem, activate my extended trial copy and I'm a bit skint right now ;)

Just have to do the tinkering on the advanced video settings. I found the big killer is the view distance. But I've stepped down to normal anyway despite having an uber PC cos I want stable FPS and lots of it.

Quotes taken from the 1.02 dedicated server BETA installation document (can't find a later version as yet):
You need a Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer to run an ArmA dedicated server. We recommend using 2 GHz machine, with 512Mb RAM and a 1Mbit upload network bandwidth.
Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB RAM. 100MB up/down data transfer, Windows Server 2003... Guess mine qualifies here
There are two possible ways to install the dedicated server. When you have installed the ArmA game, you can use the main executable (ArmA.exe) with the command line argument –server to start a dedicated server. While this is easy, it requires the ArmA DVD to be present in the drive during server operation and also original serial number.
OK, so first option is a no-go.. can't keep the DVD in the drive and also need the serial key myself.
If you want to run a server without the DVD and serial number, you have to use the standalone dedicated server executable. The latest version of this executable is always available from the official web site http://www.armedassault.com .To install the standalone server, you have to install the corresponding version of the game on any machine (you will need ArmA DVD for this), and add the ArmA_Server.exe file to the same directory as ArmA.exe. You can then copy the ArmA directory on to the server.
OMG, I have to upload an image of the DVD to the server. My home broadband only has 750KBit upload, so that will take FOREVER!
Is anyone able to sneakily host the image (english version of game) on a highspeed connection so that I can download it straight to my server?

No, the server is hosted in a rack in a server house in germany.

Amazon should dispatch tomorrow morning, so I should have the game Friday or Saturday depending on whether the post office decide it needs me to pick it up from the depot or not.
Basically that means I should be able to start uploading on Saturday. With Saturday being a girlfriend day and one where we aren't meeting up until the evening time then that should work out nicely really. Dunno if I will be able to install the server on Sunday though, it depends when I take my girlfriend home.

Lo Irishdude m8.... o/
Just started on my first serious mission.
3 Blackhawks
3 Squads
BH's transport squad from Base to Target, everybody jumps out and pwns the enemy in the town.
Whilst this is going on ive added a bit of fluff.
There is a patrol passing the BH's as they prep for take off, a M1A1 is moving through the area also.
In midflight the BH's will pass over a small naval battle which consists of two allied Gunboats and ~3 nme Dingys. Also you may get a flyby from a pair of Harriers on their way to take out an enemy Armoured Column at your target.
When you reach target there is a Ural (Will add more traffic) going about its route through the town. Harriers may still be attacking the Tanks when you arrive. SU37 is on intercept for the Harries, just AA loadout so its not gonna rape you. Currently only one enemy infantry squad as a bit of a place holder until i have decided exactly whats needed.
Next step is to add some more fluff to the mission and im also thinking of either a pair of Little Birds or Cobras to give some CAS.

I'm working on one at the moment too (having found out how to end it) :D
Basically it's a town, fortified against air and sea attack by US forces. OpFor players approach overland behind the defences. They are two special forces squads, one with a civvie Ural, one with civvie pickup trucks, coming in from different directions under cover of darkness. Objective is to wipe out the company of US forces in the town.
Eight guys against maybe sixty US troops with AA vehicles in support might seem unbalanced, but it's dark, all their defences are, initially at least, pointing out to sea, and it's a mission for Renegade Legion, so I figure the odds are at worst even.
Ideally I want to learn how to implement respawn though. It's a bitch having to sit a mission out, especially as I haven't fine tuned the win conditions, meaning it'll be a case of hunting the US troops down to the last man.
I'm hoping to use this as the starter mission for a campaign of Spec Ops missions before I move onto doing more major infantry and armour fights. They can be a bitch to balance though as one lucky or well driven tank can really bugger up a plan. :D
I'm not liking the fact that the US Soldiers have wrong equipment too. The riflemen use M4s when they should use M16s.

I'd wager it's in UK. I get similar pings on finnish servers whereas to german ones it'd be around 60-80 and to UK in area of 70-120 (rough estimates off the top of me head considering CS:S servers).

Would "cough up you cheapo or i'll kick your arse to next tuesday!" count as actual measures? But seriously, Bohemia is a small company making a brilliant game. They couldn't use Operation Flashpoint name with ArmA since Codemasters own the title and didn't want them to have as Bohemia doesn't want to CM to suck up all the revenue this time around. If you're buying one game this year buy ArmA, for once ignore that torrent and do the right thing :o

Vad will back me up in saying I was kick ASS at flying places in a wavery round-about kind of way, or hovering in a VERY questionable manner over flags etc. He only used to bail SECONDS before we hit the ground, usually, and then sometimes not at all!

Don't even remind me of that ... once, you killed me 16 times in a row ... felt like having a huge red arrow above my head :(
Back to the topic, choppers are ok here, more realistic I'd guess. I used to pwn in them back in BF2, now it's a tad harder.
Thing that is pissing me off the most, is that glass is NOT armored, you can kill AH1 pilot with a pistol .. it gets really nasty with AH/MH - 6, I got sniped by some random infantry dozens of times.

For me it's the silenced AKS, not sure of the name, it's long and full of numbers, but it's the standard for the Opfor saboteurs. Great gun for close quarters work, and you can drop people a good distance with it if you need to. It'll do full auto without going crazy too. Also silenced weapons are about the only ones that sound right.
I also really like the M16 and the basic AK74. I've scored good kills with both.
Scoped weapons like the M4 and the sniper rifles just leave me cold. It's too easy and it's really limiting. I like to be able to get at the enemy, close the range and fuck them up. Can't do that with a sniper rifle and even if you could you'd look a bender.

I don't like the ARs (M4, M16 etc) with Aimpoints. Obscures the target too much, you can't see where your shots are going very easily. With iron sights I like them. I also like the ACOG on the M4/203 combo. Don't like the scope on the US sniper rifle (it's not even zeroed!), but the Dragunov is ok.
Favourite gun has got to be the M240 though. You can do anything with it and it has a great big belt. Unlike the real thing it dosn't get clogged full of shit and it dosn't way a ton so it's just perfect.
Don't like any of the gun sounds, but the silenced sounds are even worse than the regular ones. The MP5 is virtually silent which is ridiculous. Ski pto about 2:13 on the below video to hear what a silenced rifle really sounds like:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_zpahLM355k&mode=related&search=
Just remember it's about ten times as loud in real life.
Hovis
Monday, 5th March 2007, 14:32
The MP5SD6 I think is the variant in the game and from what I've heard they are practically silent, because they are built from the ground up to be silent. Apparently the only thing you can hear from them is the action (i.e the sound of rounds being cycled and ejected). The silent Russian gun is a submachinegun, not sure how silent that is in real life. My guess is not very, so I don't know why they didn't use the Bizon. Best you can do with a full on rifle is whack a suppressor on it and switch to subsonic ammo, and that's still not going to be close to silent.
I agree about the iron sights though. Those big blobby aim dot things are so newb friendly it's sick, and like anything that is newb friendly you can't take it very far because it's imprecise. That's the military doctrine of the US military for you though. I want an SA-80 with iron sights damnit.

The MP5 SD series are pretty quiet, as supressed guns go, though they're actually very rudimentary. However, they're far from silent - and that's just the muzzle report, the sound of the action working only adds to it.
In truth, supressers are by no means 'silencers'. Although they do reduce the db level of the sound, mainly they change what the gun sounds like, not how loud it is. This change in sound is primarily to reduce the risk of hearing loss - supressed guns do not hurt the ears as much as 'naked' guns. Secondly, there is the bonus that in certain enviroments it can allow gunshots to go unnoticed. People will certainly hear the gunshot, but they may think it is something else other than a gunshot. Mainly however, supressors are a safety feature, not a 'stealth' aid.
The exception to all this is .22 rimfire caliber guns which you can actually make literally silent. But these have virtually no place in military or law enforcement. The only such instance of .22 rimfire I can think of was during Vietnam, some US 'tunnel rats' whose job it was to clear out tunnels were issues supressed .22 pistols. Ordinary guns, even supressed ones were so loud in the tunnels that they would deafen the shooter and even cause cave-ins.
When I shoot with a supressor on a fullbore weapon, I still wear hearing protection. Usually two sets in fact - plugs and muffs.

I read about the use of those silent .22 guns in Vietnam and one story was of a guy shooting a sentry with one and the sentry just thought he was being bitten by insects. Bearing in mind how big insects get in the jungle he'd probably be better off getting shot.
