This is for those who whish to read it without leaving the RL site, it is done with mIRC simply because it generaly the most used.

To get mIRC, you need to visit it's site here (http://www.mirc.com), once you have downloaded and installed the client you are ready to connect.

When you first boot the client you should get a window like this:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ss1.JPG

If not you may need to open it, either by going to file/select server, or pressing ALT + E.

There are two drop-down boxes here that you need to take note of:
IRC Network
IRC Server.

The IRC Network is the network you will be connecting to. I have mine set to Quakenet as that is the one most clans in europe use, including us.

The IRC Server is simply a server for the network, chosing one should be based on where in the EU you are living. Hence mine is set on the UK.

RL's IRC Channel is on QuakeNet's network so you should select this, along with a server that is close to you.

Next, you need to set up IRC to automaticaly join a channel when you connect to the network. To do this, you need the same window open, however you must click on the options button on the menu to the left (The client automaticaly highlights the one you have):

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ss2.JPG

Once you have done this, you need to click on Preform (Boxed in Red). This will bring up another menu:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ss3.JPG

At the moment you have no preform commands, so it will be blank, it also defaults to "All Networks" We need to set it to the network you want (Quake net). We also need to set it to automaticaly carry out these commands on connect. First check the box that enables the commands to be automaticaly done (Checkbox that is boxed in red). Then, click on Add (Again boxed in Red), this will bring up yet another menu:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ss4.JPG

This one is preaty self explanatory, you simply scroll down to quakenet and click on it, then click on ok.

Now, you need to change the drop-down box that says "All Networks" to quakenet (Should be the second option between All Networks and Other Networks). This will simply the name to Quakenet. However, when you enter commands in the text box it tells mIRC that you only want them carryed out on Quakenet.

We need to tell Quakenet to join the RL channel when it connects, to do this, you need to enter some commands into the text box (Commands in quotes, comments afterwards):

/join #renegades
This is a simple join command, it tells Quakenet to join our channel (#Renegades, all channels start with a #).

/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH (Name) (Pass)
This will be covered later, it authenticates you with IRC, which allows the IRC network to "Flag" you for certian things, such as Admin Privalages in the IRC Channel, however, this will not work untill you actualy register with the IRC network, I will cover this afterwards

/mode (IRC Nick) +x
This changes you're hostname from "Name@IPAddy.Area(e.g. Shef for sheffield).host(e.g.Blueyonder) to Name@Name.Users.quakenet.org, the reasons for this are not hard to geuss. You MUST be authed with Q (Quakenets name/flagging service) to do this. Also: IRC Nick is differant to you're Auth Name, the nick can change the Auth Name is chosen only once by you when you register

When you are done with this: You should have a box that looks like this (Replacing things in brackets with what applys to you):

To register with Q you need to Connect to IRC at least once, when you are on you must then type the command /msg Q hello myemail@addy.com myemail@addy.com

If you miss the email address off you will get a Q spam message telling you what to do:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/qa1.JPG

After typing the correct address in Q will tell you it has emailed you:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/qa2.JPG.

All the details should be in this email, so use a correct address:

http://www.flufball.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/qa3.JPG.

After clicking the activation link Quakenet will bring up a security page, once you have typed the numbers you will recive a page telling you what you're password/auth name is (Password blanked out on screeny :p), along with some useful commands, such as how to change your password:

Is this valid any more? Because I've joined #renegades on quakenet and it's a Quake 4 team channel.

Nah mate, its not, lost my net for a while and came back and the chan was stolen, not many of RL like IRC, I think any technology that doesn't have flashing bells and sirens doesn't appeal to much of the legion, it's too complicated and plain. :p
