View Full Version : Renegade Commandos

Hello fellow renegades,
i think it is ages ago since i lead one of our squads the last time.
This thread is the preparation to change that.
As you might notice i dont say 'lead one of our platoons'.
The whole purpose of this thread is to set up a squad of heavy infantry fanatics like i am in my deepest heart.
I dont wanna run a squad far away from the rest of the legion but right in the middle of them to give them all support we can offer.
But we will use our own TS squad channel with channel commander flag of course.
In order to work properly i require some certs from every squad member.
Advanced Medic
Engineer
Reinforced Exo Suit
Medium Assault
Anti Vehicular
To clarify one thing first: The weapon of choice for this squad is the gauss/punisher + phoenix and not the jackhammer (but that doesnt permit the usage of the hammer as long as you carry a gauss as well).
In addition to that i require some implants as well.
Personal Shield (to have more staying power)
Surge (there may be occassion where we have to surge to a certain position as fast as possible. dont wanna let some ppl behind.)
Role:
Heavy Infantry Warfare
Transport:
Galaxy, Thunderer, Vanguard, Buggy, ATV, AMS ... (as many rexos as possible)
Squad Rules:
Stick together
Stay in formation and dont rush for the kill
Do not dance from left to right and block all others line of fire
Stay back and beat the enemy with crossfire
Hug the outer walls if you move
Pass behind squad members and dont block their fire arc
The last 2 squad members walk backwards and watch the back
Commandos:
Squad Leader commandos
Form up - Follow the squad leader
Dig in - Search a good spot and go into defence mode
Rush 'Designation' - Hit surge and run to the designated target
Defend 'Designation' - Move into defencive position at the designated target
Attack 'Designation' - Attack the designated target
Squad Member commandos
Stop (followed by a Ready) - Squad dugs in until the squad member is ready
Enemy N,W,E,S - Threat spotted north, west, east, south of squad
'YourName' down - If you die let the rest of the squad know
bet i forgot a lot of things but more to come soon (have to read what i wrote so far first ;) )
If you are interested in something like that please /enlist in a reply.
Really wanna know if its worth to put more time into this or if you dont like such strict rules.
PS: it might help to play republic commandos to get a feeling for basic infantry movement and squad deployment

See if I was still playing the game this is just the kind of stuff I'd like to be doing :)
I'd suggest you mix in some MAXs. Scatters for the charges. falcons for the defense and sparrows to cover the team while you're moving from tower to base (hack them a scatter when you get there).

depending on the situation i will consider that option.
max suits are pretty good as meat shields but they slow down the squad,
require adv medics to lose their ability and tend to block the line of fire a lot.
not easy to convince a scatter max not to charge right into the middle of the enemies.
maybe we can set up a terminator squad under another squad leader ;)

Sounds like a sexah plan.
FWIW here's what I reckon to such a plan.
1. Perhaps have AV -or- SA as mandatory. For a squad fighting in open country you need every Phoenix you can get -but- if maybe two guys of ten were carrying Thumpers instead loaded with jammer 'nades then you have an extra weapon against overrunning tanks and also base turrets and mines.
2. Perhaps make CR3 and a CUD mandatory, or at least an objective for each member of the squad. That gives you a means to rapidly clear minefields to assist advancing vehicles or to disable tower turrets and so on.
3. Harrasser is one cert and it is probably the best vehicle for what you seem to have in mind because it can get you almost anywhere in full rexo really fast without dying to one mine. You could drive to within range of the target, bail out and go to work.
4. All the advanced certs are really useful for infantry work. In open country spits and mines rape tanks and protect the crew from cloakers and once you get into a base advanced allows you to re-arm.
Possible cert template could be:
MA - 2
Rexo - 3
AV or SA - 3
adv medic - 5
adv hacker - 5
Engineering - 3
AMS, transport or Harrasser - 2 or 1
That would cover anybody or BR19 or 20. A BR21 could have both AMS and harrasser and BR23 could have combat engineering too.

harasser is a good idea m8.
but AV is a must have. everyone has to have it.
you can have SA as well and use the mixed weapon loadout with gauss, thumper, phoenix.
Hovis

Come to think of it the Punisher cancels out the usefulness of SA but you'd need to find some pretty heroic riflemen to willingly use it in an open country gun battle.

i really like your idea shy. I was playing Republic Commandos and I thought that it would be really good to apply this to RL.
We have to watch out though that this doesn't alienate other RL members. If too many people join, it may be hard to control and it may take too large a force out of overall RL.
IMO Shy should pick those that he trusts and feels that he can communicate with and keep it down to 10. If more people want to do it, then Shy can pick another SL for a second squad.

i will not make this squad some players only.
everyone who has the certs and the motivation to follow the orders is welcome.
the first 10 guys are in the squad. no priorities.
if we have more guys who wanna play like this then all we need is a second squad leader.

Question: Since i can't live without Adv.Hacking could that substitute for Adv.Medic? Otherwise my cert kit fits right in there already, including Ground Transport. Of course with great pain and arm twisting i could switch hack to medic if it's mandatory.

thumpers are more or less replaced by punishers.
this ensures that we can fire some grenades into a room and then charge without weapon swaps.
but if ppl really wanna use a thumper they can carry it as a third weapon in their inventory (see screenshot in appendix I).

this squad really requires adv medic from everyone.
last man standing has to be able to start the revive session.
adv hackers arent important for this squad setup cause everyone is geared up allready.
PS: dont hurry with the recerting. my new mainboard isnt here yet (damn you asus you slow crafting monkeys!!!) and i wont resub before i have my last part :(

Actually, this sounds like something I may be good at... still, i'd really like to keep HA, especially since the first few TR/VS we slaughter will provide us with better spamcannons than Gauss (yes, it owns at ranges, but charging down the stairway behind those slowass lasher orbs is a nice feeling as well :)). Will have to see how the certs all add up for me.
Edit: Sorry to all who liked it, but imo this is better than the mossie idea.

8 frag, 10 plasma I think.

My chief concern is that for all the tactics and medics we might have it could still be possible for a BFR to stomp on us. Some experimentation into just how much Phoenix punishment a BFR can stand may be in order.
Also the Aurora deli variant is lethal to infantry. In fact any sort of vehicle or BFR could give us a real hammering, even with a full compliment of AV.
Much as I like this idea I think we need to be under no illusions that it's going to be shit-hard to implement successfully on continents like Solsar, Ishundar and Seahorse. I expect us to be able to utterly dominate on Hossin though, even against enemy tanks.
I reckon for this plan to work though we would need to be platooned up with the rest of the outfit so everyone can be included. This is not just so folks can all work together it is practical too, armour and air support and so on would make this group a lot more effective.

This looks good :)
The rest of the legion is really going to be needing to do something complementary so that this works as a whole, what certs/role would you suggest?
At the moment a few of us have Vans and other vehicles, perhaps a squad for the hard targets (BFR's, Prowlers, Magriders, etc) would compliment this well?
As for your commando's, I like many others already carry most of those certs, but most of my others are support, like AMS and vehicles.

10 plasma and 12 frag (after max buff) if I remember right..
scatter maxes are imune to frag fire, completely. shield= 5 shots or sumat.. which means you can fire all day before killing it.

You can sign me up if there's still room. Got adv.med and ha but i was wondering if i could have SA instead of AV. The Thumper/Rocklet Rifle setup is like a punisher setup imo only that I find the rocklet rifle more effective than a deci cos it can get much more ammo for less room.
Now about HA, not really intending to drop it but i can live without using it when we're doing our ops :D

i would prefer if everyone has a phoenix. works very well against reaver spammers and light vehicles.
for HA users i suggest to carry phoenix, gauss and jackhammer. its a bit low on ammo but very versatile.

only good that the vs have no clue how deadly the aurora is ;)
and sure heavy vehicles are very hard to take down.
thats why we try to avoid them
prowler = 4000 armor
1 phoenix = 250 damage -> 10 phoenix = 2500 damage
its tough but only one of us has to survive it ;)
Hovis
Saturday, 12th February 2005, 14:08
I like the policy that only one needs to survive but I'm pretty certain that we could, and should, be using this as part of a combined arms force. Sure we could become the ultimate footzerg -but- suppose we were operating with an armour squad and an air cavalry squad (not necessarily full sized) alongside us?
Ten elite infantry would be able to clear mines, disable enemy tanks, kill jammer troops, conduct repairs, capture towers and generally perform all the duties that a pure tank formation cannot, but they would also benefit from having Vanguards close to smash up heavy armour resistence, I mean you cannot beat the Vanguard for a rolling bullet stopper. We could literally use the Vanguards as rolling cover.
I mean while mathematically the troops can handle the occassional tank and Reaver spammer and so forth should we run into two or three tanks with air support the infantry would be in real trouble without some serioues beef backing their play.

Where does a sniper fit in?
Uhmmmmm.....over on that hill somewhere? heheh.
Love the idea of a "Commando" team, but I am slightly curious as to why this doesn't become our "standard" method?
Meaning (and maybe this should be in a different post) that recently when I log in I can never really tell who's leading, and I feel its inappropriate for me to just ask. If we had this "standard" set up, then players who are coming in can have a choice : Do I play Infantry or Vehicle/Gunner? If you are doing Infantry then you jump into the Infantry channel, and make sure you are certed out for the Commando style. If you have a vehicle you jump into the vehicle channel. SL's would both be channel commanders or have whisper's set up.
Of course, the point of this "commando" team is for the team to have a strict cert requirement/implant requirement. So if needs be, have one "regular" infantry channel and then the "commando" channel. Of course, I do think that we need to specialize our Infantry tactics (as this "Commando" team would do) and start making the impact that we know we are capable of.
Cheers,
FuSs

5-20 fps in every combat with more than 20 guys
with new comp:
290 fps in sanct with high settings
40+ fps in big fights
still have some stutter sometimes but i think that will go once my comp is 100% configured and installed.

mosquitos if we have to travel really fast and thunderers in the main time.

8 rexo grunts with adv medic
every fireteam consists of 1 thunderer, 2 gunner and 2 grunts who jump out and follow the thunderer (which moves at slow speed) to cover it with MA and AV if neccessary.

Final Revamp:
TS:
Set keys 'switch to channel' Commando Team 1, Commando Team 2, Commando Team 3 and [RL] Renegade Legion (4 different keys)
Set key 'whisper to channel list Commando Team 1, Commando Team 2, Commando Team 3' (all in one key: talk to all commandos)
Certs required per Team:
2 * Rexo, adv medic, MA, AV, mosquito (as passengers)
2 * Rexo, adv medic, MA, SA, mosquito (as gunners)
1 * ground transport, adv hacker, mosquito (as driver)
bold certs are important
Implants required per team member:
Surge (everyone should be able to rush at the same speed. dont wanna lose slowbees)
Personal Shield (recommended. works well for MA, rexo shootouts)
Each squad consists 5 players.
3 squads form a platoon.
set the keys and read the first post about some basic stuff.
the rest is common sense.
5 men squads because its easier to coordinate and less traffic on TS that way.
Basic Thunderer Rules:
If engaged by vehicles while in a thunderer the 2 AV passengers jump out and help with AV. (they most likely die but that for we have 2 more adv medics ;))
If engaged from base walls the 2 passengers jump out, the thunderer slows down and the passenger help with MA while hiding behind the thunderer.
every vehicle is non-tech. so this squad isnt limited by poplocks.
fastest transport in the game + hard hitting APC's.
PS: everyone who wanna take part in this squad should set the keys and read the basic rules. i dont wanna repeat everything ingame.
