View Full Version : The 'perfect' pve group build?

what is the perfect 1-5 men group for pve ?
in my opinion no group should lack a revive and a healer. reasons are pretty obvious.
here is a list of what i think are the 'perfect' group builds for 1 to 5 men groups.

Solo:

Hunter: pet, good damage
or Warlock: pet, good damage
or Paladin, heal, tank, good damage up to lvl45

2men group:

Paladin
Warlock

Paladin is a tank who offers heal and revive. He also does good damage (at least up to lvl45).
Warlock offers a pet, high damage over time (easier to hold aggro for the pala this way) and a backup revive for the paladin.
The backup revive allows the paladin to revive himself after combat even if they both die. Wait until the monster go away, revive pala, pala revives warlock, group ready to go on.
This team never wastes time walking from the graveyard back to the instance.
Not to mention that both get a horse for free at level 40 (this way nobody has to reduce his travel speed)
Other 2men groups are doomed as soon as the reviver dies.

3men group:

Paladin
Warlock
Mage

paladin and warlock because of the reasons above.
mage offers the best control (sheep and freeze) of all classes and high damage output.
in addition the mage offers improved travel speed due to his town portals.

4men group:

Paladin
Warlock
Mage
Priest/Druid

time to get a main healer into the group, isnt it ? :p

5men group:

Paladin
Warlock
Mage
Priest/Druid
Paladin/Warrior

additional heal/revive + aura OR a better tank.
both valuable for a big group.

PS: warlock is the perfect character to gather the group.
there are allmost allways people around who help to summon party members (for all who dont know a warlock can summon party members from everywhere to his location)

feel free to post suggestions, ideas or just flame me ;)

The holy trinity that all high level instance groups are build on is Warrior, Priest and Mage, then probably a rogue for DPS/sap and one additional spot that can be filled by a Warlock (DoT, DPS) or a Paladin (Off-tank, healing, back-up res, survivability)

Hunters don't seem to have a place in high-level instance groups, sadly. They can't match the rogue or mage for pure damage and have no effective crowd control. Pet just dies too fast to monsters that do 1000 damage per hit since there is no way to upgrade it past 60, unlike players who can get vastly better through equipment.

Well, as a priest I must say I quite like groups with a good deal of melee characters. Several ranged people usually just means more trouble in the really tough fights :P

Personally, I really like a setup like ...
Warrior (main tank)
Paladin (secondary tank, buffs, backup healer)
Rogue (mega damage output, can clean up the weak monsters faster than anyone else + sap)
Mage (sheep, AoE, high damage)
Priest (healer)

So yeah, that's the holy trinity + a pally and a rogue ... and if I was to replace anything, I think the rogue would go first :)

I haven't made it to the very top level instances, been in Uldaman, Zul'Farrak and Maraudon, though.

priest, mage, warrior is a strong combo but i wont miss the warlock.
especially in high level instance where whole groups tend to die pretty fast is a backup revive one of the most valuable things.
also his damage output is just amazing if he spends some soul shards.

Problem is that the druids only function in a group is as a replacement for the priest. Cat form and bear form can't replace warriors and rogues respectively.

The few times I've had a well playing druid in the group it's actually been pretty good. The bear ain't as good as a warrior, the cat is not as good as the rogue and the heals not as good as the priest ... but the ability for him to switch around be just what he needs to be in the situation makes it a nice addition to a group that already has a primary tank, healer and DD. Not to mention the buffs are great and druids are the only ones that get combat rez.

having played a druid i can only say one thing....

A druid in the right hands is very very very powerfull, and could be called overpowered.

Warrior
Priest
Mage
Warlock
Rogue

Warlock adds soulstone to priest, in case of wipe, priest waits for mobs to de-aggro, then revives

Any warrior with 60-levels experiance should be able to effectively tank without needing a paladin (the class that seems to attract the biggest cock-ends in the game, I've grouped with perhaps 3 palas I'd consider working with again). Rogues are the damage dealers vs. elites, mages versus hordes.

Voidwalker (Warlock minion) provides effective second tank in the case of more than 3 elites at once.

This setup also allows Mind Control/Sheep/Banish to tie up 3 mobs at once, and effectively

Both Rogues and Warlocks (eye of killrog minion) can explore areas without aggroing

The only downside is lack of buffs - only Fortitude and Arcane Intellect (plus optional Blood Pact if the Warlock brings an Imp)

Also, There's only one group member likely to be a miner, a huge bonus :p

Priest is the only healer I'll consider, unless I'm in a highly over-powered group. I've yet to see a Druid or Pala that can concentrate on keeping me alive :p

[Eidt2] D'oh, did I forget to mention summon? I only walk to about 10% of instances, othertimes I just wait for the warlock to summon :D [/edit]
