Just read that Valve are "almost completely wrapped up the next big release" for TF2 which should contain both new unlockables for Pyro and also the "Meet the Sniper" movie.
It seems that the replacement for the fire axe might be the "Axtinguisher" which does half damage to normal non-burning enemies, but always scores a critical on burning enemies.
The new update will be making some other "significant changes" to the pyro class, whether you have the unlockables or not.
Sounds fun. Discuss :)

Hi Buzzbob.
Thanks for all the feedback, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the
game. We are indeed investigating Soldier changes, and one of the
changes we're trying out is focused on making Soldiers a little more
careful firing their rockets at point blank targets.
As for the Pyro scoring, we have a minor tweak coming down the pipe.
He's going to get a small amount of points for every enemy he ignites.
This should reward you for those moments where you drop into the middle
of an enemy pack and light them all up, hurting them all and disrupting
their plans, but not managing to actually kill them.
Robin.

If Pyro is the next class, that'll be awsome. Quite likely too-
I reckon they did medic because not enough people were playing it and you need at least 3 on a successful 12-man team. Pyro hasn't been played much either, and no-one seems to use it in competitive matches- soldier nearly always beats pyro at close range.

When we released Team Fortress 2, we also released the production tools that we made our maps with. Since then, we’ve seen a ton of great, community-made maps appear on servers out there, and received many emails from players recommending their favorites to us. After seeing the large number of these maps, and the high quality work contained within them, we decided it’d be great to get some of them out in an update so that everyone can experience them.
For the first Community Map Pack, we've selected two of the best community-made maps out there. It wasn't easy to select just two, with so many great maps to choose from, and more appearing every day. We've had a lot of fun playing these maps, and we know that many of you have too. For those of you who haven’t tried them out, you’re in for a treat.
The link also has images of the new weapons and details of the achievements.

heavy update is out.
Unlocked the 'sandvich' so far. Achievements are achieveable this time unlike the joke original medic patch.
The new payload map id say is better than goldrush and the new community map is v.good also.
Given the area maps a shot too, if anyone is still playing these are pretty good with lower numbers (6per team id say is optimal)
