Hi folks,

Have the 14-day trial and wondered if anyone could take me through the basics? I gather we're French and playing on Roberts - is that correct?

Spanish on Roberts

Ah ok. How come we went Spanish out of interest? Thought we were Frenchies in the Beta...

Cuz being French sucks. It also turns out Spanish have the lowest pop and are the most badass motherfuckers in the Carribean.

lol fair enough.

Gave this an uber-quick try and my first reaction was "Blimey, this looks like EQII". Boaty combat looks (obviously) slower-paced and the boarding stuff looks good. I think I'd be interested in finding out more about the high-level, large-scale combat and mechanics of the game (trading, building, etc), but we'll see.

Overall immediate impression was not "holy crap", more sort of "hmmm".

PotBS has more common grounds with Planetside than your average mmorpg. It's a team-oriented game which culminates to PvP conquest of capturing enemy ports. Playing it mainly PvE and solo it does get boring fast but that's just skimming the surface.

That said the salt of the game being ship-to-ship PvP combat which isn't as much fast paced shooter but more like chess with guns it's fair to say it's not everyone's cuppa.

PvP is a bit of a misconceving statement in this game. It exists only in the sesnse that the phrase should be there to define the difference between players and NPC's. It's more like a combat game with a few NPC's added into the fray as a stepping stone (sort of like turrets in Planetside, but less deadly).

That's kinda the impression I got. If I give it a whirl for a couple of nights for example, do you think I'd really be able to understand what it's all about, or does it require *shudder* patience?

If your not a dim-witted idiot who is married to his cousin and lives in a cave in Devon... then you should pick up the basics in a few days.

If you've played Sid's Pirates and any avatar based MMO (WoW, City of Heroes EQ2) you've got a rough idea of how to play, that said you might not want to speak to Darth until after you've got the hang of it.

It's basically a more advanced Sid's Pirates for the ship combat and generic MMO avatar combat for the boarding actions.

Never played Pirates, but I know the basics of ship manoeuvring, etc. and as you say, the boarding stuff seems to be pretty straight-forward MMO stuff.

I did live in Devon for 6 years (my mother still does), so does that put me at a disadvantage? :)

Did you live in a cave? :p

I lived in Coldridge (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=269500&y=107500&z=5&sv=269500,107500&st=4&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&ax=269500&ay=107500). I have never spoken to a single person who has heard of the place. When we first arrived it had a population of around 200 people and 2,500 cows. It has one bus a week (on Fridays), no shops, no pub, plenty (and I mean plenty) of cowshit and very little interest for a teenager. At the age of 14 or 15 I figured that my Dad lived in London and the city provided considerably more opportunities for experimentation than a crappy little village in Devon :) I've been a Londoner from then until September last year and at the grand old age of 34 I'm now a Parisian... And by God it was worth moving here for the cheese and wine alone :D

Pretty much a cave then... you may want to give the game a week then ;)
