Has anybody heard anything bout this.

I was chattig with a few guys about it and sounds awesome, seems they have intorduced a death penalty now, though not as harsh as eve-online's.

I read an article on it but I can no longer find the link.

The pirate in me is crying out for a game like this, and I'm possibly getting a little tired of EvE after nigh on 4 years.

Ive been keeping my eye on this for a few years too, im hoping it turns out as I expected and they havent dumbed down the sea combat to cater for arseholes. I quite like the idea of having to use the weather gauge to maneuver your ship to get a better shot.

Plus just being a nasty evil bastard to everyone on the high seas appeals to my innner **** too.

land fighting is atm shit, but i wouldnt be suprised to see it being reworked as everyone has complained about it.

ship fighting is extremely enjoyable but slow and it gets repetative.

I dn't think its as bad as ludi makes out, it can be quite fun as a group, though i admit its pretty boring solo, then again what mmo isnt?

they are still balancing everything, for example they just increased the length of swashbuckling fights, im not sure if thats good or bad yet.

the production fits purpose, its easy to produced goods, and with a few ppl you can gety ships out with minimal effort, this is better than eve I think.

hovis I will be interested to see what you think.

and if anybody as any beta keys they dont want please pm me them, pariah kindly gave me his but I have about 30 ppl in my clan who want to try it lol

Have to say I really loved the ship combat. Swashbuckling etc I wasn't really sure what I was doing. I also didn't like that I had to get into the actual game to change my graphics options, my character at the moment is the default French privateer bint until I got back and make a new one where I can see what's what.

Hovis
Sunday, 5th August 2007, 21:39
So far I haven't got -that- far into it, but this is looking like a really, really good game. Ship to ship combat is great fun, and getting better as I unlock more abilities and stuff. It's perhaps a little too fast paced, but that's okay cos at the moment I'm darting about in small ships with only a few guns. I hope it gets a little more ponderous for the bigger ships. Tactically the ship combat shits on most MMOs that involve static number hammering and positioning and timing your volleys is important. The swashbuckling is also more fun now I know what's what and the system, which relies upon knocking enemies off balance before delivering killer attacks, is really good. It means fights take a reasonable length of time without the hugely tedious exchange of wounds that takes place in most games. If you fight smart you don't get hurt.

Have given it a whole day's play. This game owns, and I've not even gone into PvP yet. Just using a small fast ship to take out bigger merchants for the sweet piracy doubloon is great fun. Chainshot the sails down, crawl up the rear of the enemy ship when they are disabled, clear the decks with grapeshot, board and loot the booteh.

Well it's been a couple of days and I've put a lot of hours in, a silly amount since it'll get wiped, but this is a damn sweet game. Damn sweet indeed. Like EVE but a lot more fun and a lot more egalitarian. Teaming up on massive ships as pirates is a hell of a lot of fun. The big ships are hellishly dangerous, but if you can get in close and use speed they can be brought down.

Can't hurt to try. Seriously it is a rock solid game, and even if you started out a long way level-wise behind Endangerment and I you'd still be able to help make kills and get XP. When we started out we were having to grind out results, chopping down masts and shredding sails before making the kill, it's only now at about level 15 we're really starting to be able to trade body blows with heavier merchants (still not the combat ships though, still need to dance around those fuckers).

Flufball

Edit: Re-Done, wonder if they'll let me in or not... Still, if I don't I don't, although I get the feeling theres alot of people in there for a free game rather than actualy testing the damn thing, which is a minor pet hate of mine.

Endangerment
Wednesday, 8th August 2007, 16:15
we were talking about thiis last night, it basically depends on play style. If its a small group of u then pirate is great, if you expand and want decent industrial capacity and to produce the big ass ships (read 112 big ass guns - my ship currently has 22 light guns) then you need to be a 'nation' and we all know British is the only choice for that :)

Flufball
Wednesday, 8th August 2007, 19:27
Are you fixed to a nation? That is to say if I was The Right Hon. Lord Admiral of His Royal Majesty's Second Fleet, would I be able to become a pirate and sink everyone or am I stuck as what I choose?

National loyalty is a bit like factions in PS, particularly as you do fight over ports much as with bases in PS (although it takes much longer to capture them). All factions have the option to fire at about 75% of the naval traffic, pirates a little more so. There's tons to shoot at for everybody.

How it basically works is the three nations fight to control the whole of the game area, the pirates fight for shits and giggles and the fat loot. The nations have three classes, the pirates only one, so the pirates have fuck all by way of serious ship building. They can captured and use ships directly though, so any pirate at any time will have a small armada of disposable ships to play with, while a Navy captain will probably have one shit-hard ship he will want to keep alive. As Endangerment says the First Rate ships of the line, the 105 gunners, those bitches are rare and you'll never see a pirate in one.

Pirates lose ships all the time. You lose a ship you steal a new one, piece of cake. Any ship you or your group beats you can have. Fuck it Paradine's (at level 8) already got a level 30+ frigate waiting for him when he levels into it that we took down this evening. If you're a pirate you take what you can and give back nothing. Endangerment and I have been levelling up using almost exclusively stolen ships. Think of it like GTA, see a car you like, you take it. The difference is that there's a little more to the theft than a simple carjacking.

For nations you get the big ships, but you need to look after them. You won't see if a pirate very often in a ship of the line, though it can happen, but you won't see a navy officer with a ship list full of frigates.

Since Endangerment was on my case to promote him so he can handle guild admin you can hassle him for an invite, he's going by the name of Richard Sharpe. I've got a lowbie pirate for newb training so you won't be on your own, and you'll catch up to a level where you can get stuck in pretty fast.

I have been waiting for ever for the Key on this one.

Do you know what sort of release date yet?

So far I have heard good and bad about this game, and Breadman obvisouly likes it, is there anyone else with comments

Looking at Videos I found the animation of the People a bit stale and not that fluid, but thats about all that looked bad.

Just wondering about the Questing and Money earning side of it.

What is the deal is it WOW Level up and pick up Junk and nice pieces of Eight?

Or is it Pure Kill opponent get xp?

I take it you cant upgrade your ship? you just get a new one?

I have seen in a video the Pirate on land what does that do?

Sorry for the questions I suppose I should just ask on TS.

I probably shouldn't violate the NDA too much on a forum with specifics, though I was allowed to write a preview, and here it is (http://www.custompc.co.uk/news/601249/first-look---pirates-of-the-burning-sea.html). Covers most of your points.

Ships 'lives' are really expensive though, and you still lose all your outfittings. Unless they newbed the game up something rotten. Will have to have a lookysee.

Hovis
Friday, 9th November 2007, 22:09
Ahh it does suck low level. When you get higher level and get a sense of what you're doing, and also the ability to -do- things to people in combat deliberately rather than mashing it for the win it's much better.

One Armed Scissor
Saturday, 10th November 2007, 14:46
In that case i might go for it then, i went pirate (probally like 90% of the playerbase) and i cant learn that cutlass/dagger fighting style, am i stuck with dirty fighting?

And where should i put my "talent" points? cos im not quite sure what to do with them.

Hovis

You can change fighting style. Talents can also be respecced later. As a pirate I went for gunnery skills and also some for speed and evasion in the open sea.

Started a pirate (Gunn The Goit) and seems interesting so far. Swashbuckling feels... wobbly to say at least, lacks flesh if you know what i mean. Going to play a bit more to get a proper feel of it.

How do you report bugs btw?

Gunhead
Monday, 12th November 2007, 17:47
Having played Gunn The Goit to level 12 now i must admit i like this one, it's got potential that's for sure. Fresh as mmo's go, "new" theme - if you liked Sid Meier's Pirates! and ever though "how cool would this be as a multiplayer?" look no further.

Plenty of npc missions to do (or "PvE quests" if you like it that way) with player-driven economy, lots of stuff to doodle with. Haven't tried much into the Nation vs. Nation war as there just so much you can do alone with a "lowbie" ship (going against a 40-gun heavy frigate in your bathtub with peashooters you're better off scuttling your ship at the dock :p) but seems interesting as it's a game of conquest where you actually capture ports and control territory.

There's also an endgame scenario unlike Planetside where once your nation (Britain, France, Spain or Pirates) dominates the Caribbean the winner is declared and rewarded and the server is "reset" with a bit of a leg-up for the previous underdogs.

The game's centered around naval warfare and conquering the high seas for your nation and there's many ways to help your cause.

Swashbuckling (avatar combat) i still find rather awkward. As is even Sid's Pirates!'s simple fencing system would've been a better deal over the current rubbish mmorpg'ish spam-random-attacks-and-see-what-happens job.

Deffo one to look forwards to.

What's the PvP like?

Is there a flagging system similar to PvE realms on WoW where twats can float about free as a bird til they feel like PvP flagging?

Are there contested seas/territories, a la WoW? Anyone who ventures into those waters of opposing nation is free-game? Free for all areas?

What's the ganking potential like?

The thing I'm most interested in: What's the small scale pvp potential? (eg, 2-3 people going round pissing people off then doin' one before they can react)

Need more info!

There are contested areas, if you attack the ships of one particular faction at a port they control it becomes contested and you can fight in PvP there. This means you can create PvP zones where you want as part of the grand strategy, ideal to block supply routes.

Nobody gets out of PvP. You can smash a level one ship with a level fifty. If you're level one and don't like that, get out of my ocean. :)

There's plenty of ganking, but only in contested waters, so you have to be either clueless or up to no good to invite a ganking.

Small scale PvP is, well, most of it. When I played I got into more one on ones than anything else, but quite a few group fights if I was attacking ports, usually ganking people, but sometimes counter-ganks.

Hovis what effect and difference there is with surrendering and abandoning ship?
Not that i wouldn't keep fighting until i'm blown out of the water, just curious.

If you surrender you get to keep your ship but you give up some cargo.

Ah okay, cheers. So reckon "Abandon Ship" is pretty pointless then?

It's useful if people are just fucking with you. Some folks will strip your sails, kill your crew and then just sit and laugh at you.

Don't give ideas like this to Tiny T, i can just picture the Vadman and Taylor the boy wonder vigorously crayoning in their gank schemes after reading that... ;)

Aye Peg i just got my beta invite week ago so i'm playing it - got a bit limited gaming time at the moment so online somewhat randomly. Got a pirate (Gunn The Goit) and a british naval officer (Gunn Headstrong) on Blackbeard and a french privateer (Gunn de Goit) on Morgan.

Just putting this on the line now, can I have Bastard in my name?

And I don't mean having to be French and be B'stard or something gay like that. I want actual bastard.

*nm*

Got sidetracked on WoW throughout the day but it's patching n shit now so I should be on tonight. (Good old Station Launcher.)

I heard Gun mention something about a playaround on Sunday? I should be about if you're on Gun.

I really hope they beef up the dueling system, dueling is often my favourite part of games if there is a clear purpose to it, e.g Ultima Online.

Beta wipe in two days, so just go nuts. When the open beta launches we'll assemble a fleet.
